Patent Engineer

Languages: Portugues, English and German.

Born in 1988 in Curitiba, Brazil, Felipe Favaro de Oliveira is a physicist with a passion for innovation and a career that bridges cutting-edge research and the commercialization of quantum technologies.

Felipe graduated in physics from the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Natal, Brazil, in 2009, where he was awarded the “Best Student Award” for the class of 2010. He further pursued a master’s degree at UFRN, focusing on micro-magnetism (2012), a topic that ignited his interest in nanotechnologies. His academic journey continued with a PhD at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 2017, where he specialized in quantum technologies and semiconductor nano- and micro-fabrication. During this time, Felipe co-authored over 10 scientific papers, accumulating more than 1,000 citations. His contributions to the creation of diamond quantum sensors played a pivotal role in advancing quantum applications in Stuttgart.

After completing his PhD, Felipe transitioned into entrepreneurship by co-founding Qnami AG in 2017, a Swiss start-up that has since become a leader in the field of quantum technologies. At Qnami, Felipe played a critical role in the business strategy and commercialization of quantum sensors and microscopes for imaging magnetic fields at the atomic scale. He also led the management and development of the company’s intellectual property (IP) strategy, an area that has become one of his key professional focuses.

Felipe joined P&TS as a Patent Engineer to deepen his expertise in intellectual property, share his passion about the intermix between start-ups and IP, and support other entrepreneurs that desire to protect their ideas. His unique blend of technical and business skills allows him to assist clients in smartly protecting their innovations to maximize its impact on their commercialization and growth trajectories from early stages onwards. His technical expertise spans quantum devices, semiconductors, nano- and micro-fabrication techniques, and the incorporation of these technologies in devices for a variety of applications.

Outside of his professional life, Felipe is a gearhead who enjoys riding, fixing, and tinkering with cars and motorcycles. He also spends quality time with his family, camping and exploring mountain bike trails together.
